Xanxan: A Customizable and Sustainable Shelf

Optimized Design for Space and Material Efficiency

Xanxan was first conceived under the challenge of reducing the material cost and ecological impact of an existing concept. As market research went on, the lack of flexibility and adaptability of the existing shelves to user and space needs drove the project to the final solution. The project was self-commissioned from the Smallgran studio as a means to prove its design skills.

Xanxan, designed by Smallgran studio, is a revolutionary shelf that offers customizable configurations and optimized transport and storage space. The product consists of two anchor posts to which a web of strings is fastened. It includes a simple mechanism that allows the user to adjust the tension of each string, providing a straight support surface.

What sets Xanxan apart from standard shelves is its remarkable efficiency. Compared to a traditional shelf, Xanxan uses seven times less wood, requires a storage space nine times lower, and weighs four times less. This not only reduces the ecological impact but also makes it a cost-effective solution.

The design of Xanxan allows it to hold everything a standard shelf holds, and it can even act as a hanger. Its customizable configurations make it adaptable to different user and space needs, providing a versatile storage solution.

The realization of Xanxan involves lathing hard Maple Wood to form the wooden pieces. The holes for screws and strings are then drilled, allowing for easy assembly. The strings used are standard Paracord, which the user cuts to a specific length based on the distance between the anchor posts.

Installation of Xanxan is a simple process. The user first decides the position of each post and fixes them securely. Then, four string segments are tied to the posts in a zig-zag manner. By turning the pegs, the tension of the strings increases, allowing them to support weight. Over time, if the shelf loses tension, a few more turns of the pegs will fix the issue.

The Xanxan shelf has a weight capacity of up to 20 kg and comes in a compact package, measuring 90 mm x 70 mm x 245 mm. Its dimensions can vary depending on how it is installed, ranging from 300 mm to 1500 mm in length.

The development of Xanxan took a total of 12 months, with the initial 5 months spent at the Polytechnical University of Valencia and the remaining 7 months at the Smallgran studio in Valencia. The project involved extensive market research, concept design, prototyping, and collaboration with master carpenters to ensure the best materials and manufacturing processes were used.

Xanxan has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
